7 sources for research topic
My research topic is how biases affect technical communication. I will probably narrow it down to something more specific, like gender bias. Examples of this would be using gendered language that assumes the reader is male and alienating the rest of the audience, or by depicting one gender in a harmful and offensive way.
The seven possible sources I have found are the following:
Shenk, Robert. “Gender Bias in Naval Fitness Reports? A Case Study on Gender and
Rhetorical Credibility.”
Sánchez, Fernando. “Trans Students’ Right to Their Own Gender in Professional
Communication Courses: A Textbook Analysis of Attire and Voice Standards in Oral Presentations.”
Gurak, Laura J., and Nancy L. Bayer. “Making Gender Visible: Extending Feminist
Critiques of Technology to Technical Communication.”
Lay, Mary M. “The Value of Gender Studies to Professional Communication
Research.”
Pomerenke, Paula, Varner, Iris I., and Mallar, Suzanne. "The Depiction of Female and Male Professionals in Business Communication Textbooks."
Stitt, Wanda L. "Dealing with Bias in Business Communication."
Durack, Katherine T. “Gender, Technology, and the History of Technical
Communication."
I think that would be an interesting topic considering that the nature of technical writing is that it's clear-cut and unbiased. To continue along that line, I think it'd be cool to explore the line between bias and writing for a specific audience and what can be applied there. I don't know if there would be any substance there, but that is what came to my mind when I read your topic because I think the audience can dictate bias in some cases.
ReplyDelete5. The sources I think would be the most valuable are “Making Gender Visible: Extending Feminist Critiques of Technology to Technical Communication” and "Gender, Technology, and the History of Technical Communication." The first one is interesting because it seems to include feminist theory and critiques found in literature, and how that can be related to PTW. The second source will be helpful in understanding the historical context and long-term effects of gender bias in PTW.
